## How do you change the color of an image with AI?

Upload one picture and name the object, the new color and what must stay. Nano Banana 2, a [Google image model](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/image-generation), redraws it at 1K for 20 credits per edit. Our nine recorded recolors show useful results and limits: a car edit changed a shopfront, a dark background darkened the mug, tote edits added stitches, and shadows can be redrawn. Inspect the whole result before using it.

- **Model:** Nano Banana 2 (Google)
- **Offered here:** 1K, one image per request
- **One edit:** 20 credits
- **Recolors we recorded:** 9 edits, with originals and notes

## Recolors we ran, with the picture each started from

These four edits are real Nano Banana 2 outputs, made through [fal.ai](https://fal.ai) on October 5, 2026. Each started from a picture made earlier that day from a text prompt, and each is shown with that original, its exact prompt and its receipt. All four are 1K and cost $0.08 each at the API, which is 20 credits here. The notes say what held and what did not.

### Armchair recolored to emerald green
The fabric changed and the frame, wall, floor and shadows look untouched. It is still not identical: outside the chair the average difference from the starting picture was 2 out of 255.
- Prompt: Change the armchair's fabric from mustard yellow to deep emerald green. Keep its shape, the folds, the shadows, the wall and the light exactly as they are.
- Settings: image to image, 4:3, 1K, 1200×896
- Generated: 2026-10-05 (provider request 01a10bfa-4189-75e0-8750-02def3c144a2), took 18 s, provider cost $0.08

### Red tulip recolored to yellow
Only the tulip changed; its stem and leaves stayed green, and the daisy, iris, vases, shelf and wall look untouched. Outside the flower head the average difference was 4 out of 255, so the rest is close but not identical.
- Prompt: Change only the red tulip to a yellow tulip. Keep the white daisy, the purple iris, the three vases, the shelf and the wall exactly as they are.
- Settings: image to image, 4:3, 1K, 1200×896
- Generated: 2026-10-05 (provider request 01a10bfc-5ea3-7fe0-be35-8b84d98a68fc), took 14 s, provider cost $0.08

### Poster headline recolored to red
Only the headline changed color, and every word is unchanged. The red came out as a dark brick red, not a bright red, and fine detail in the loaf illustration was redrawn, which shows only in a pixel comparison.
- Prompt: Change only the colour of the large headline from dark green to red. Keep the words, the letter shapes, the loaf illustration, the small line and the background exactly as they are.
- Settings: image to image, 3:4, 1K, 896×1200
- Generated: 2026-10-05 (provider request 01a10bfb-1327-7072-b0cb-bacc9357a82a), took 13 s, provider cost $0.08

- Started from: https://imagecolor.app/media/bakery-poster.jpg

### Hatchback recolored to blue, with a spill
The paint, glass and reflections changed as asked, and the tail light stayed red. The shopfront door and pillar at the far left changed from grey to teal, which we did not ask for, although the prompt said to keep everything else.
- Prompt: Change the car's paint from red to deep metallic blue. Keep the reflections, the street, the sky and everything else exactly as they are.
- Settings: image to image, 16:9, 1K, 1376×768
- Generated: 2026-10-05 (provider request 01a10bfa-be4c-7e83-8967-63089c3ac693), took 21 s, provider cost $0.08

## What changed outside the object we recolored

A recolor is a redraw: the model returns a whole new picture, not the old one with a color patched in. To see how much else moved, we compared each edit with its starting picture outside a box drawn by hand around the object we asked to change. The difference at a pixel is the largest change in red, green or blue, out of 255. No edit was identical outside the box.

- **Armchair:** average difference 2.1; 0.04% of the pixels moved by more than 12. The closest to untouched.
- **Tulip:** average 4.0; 1.6% of the pixels moved by more than 12.
- **Poster headline:** average 4.7; 3.4% moved by more than 12, most of them in the fine detail of the loaf illustration, which looked the same at a glance.
- **Car:** average 6.0; 9.9% moved by more than 12. Of the pixels outside the car that moved by more than 24, about two thirds are the shopfront at the left edge, whose door went from grey to teal.
- **Tote bag, two colors:** average 3.9 in both; 1.3% moved by more than 12. Both edits also drew stitching on the bag that the original did not show.
- **Chalk text:** average 4.7; 4.3% moved by more than 12. The white CAFÉ sign in the window stayed white.

So expect small changes everywhere, and sometimes a visible one you did not ask for. Every edit asked the model to keep everything else exactly as it was; in the car edit that did not prevent the teal door. We did not run a comparison without that instruction, so these samples do not establish whether it reduces unwanted changes. Look at the whole result before you use it. Background edits behave differently: in [change background color of image](https://imagecolor.app/change-background-color-of-image) a dark backdrop made the object itself darker.

## How to change the color of an image here

1. **Upload one picture** JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB. Use a picture you have the right to use. This site is for products, objects, cars and artwork; it does not offer edits to hair, skin or clothing on a person.
2. **Say what changes and what stays** Name the object, the new color and what must stay: “Change the armchair’s fabric from mustard yellow to deep emerald green. Keep its shape, the folds, the shadows, the wall and the light exactly as they are.” That prompt gave our cleanest result.
3. **Generate** The cost, 20 credits, is shown before you confirm. In our runs the result came back in the shape of the picture we started from.
4. **Check the whole picture, then download** Look at the edges and at everything you did not name before you use it. Results stay in My images, private to your account.

## How this site works

What you can count on here, and what you should not expect.

- **The price before you pay it** The editor shows the credit cost before you generate: 20 credits for one 1K edit.
- **A whole result, or your credits back** If a request fails, the model’s safety filter refuses it, or the file fails our check, nothing is kept and the whole charge comes back on its own. An edit that came out but that you do not like is still charged.
- **Your pictures stay private** Your upload is sent to the model provider, fal.ai, to make the edit. Results are kept in My images, private to your account, and you download each one.
- **What is not offered here** Text to image, 2K and 4K, several images per request, a brush or mask to select the area, batch recoloring, and edits to photos of people. Watermark and logo removal are not offered either.

## What a recolor costs here

One 1K edit is 20 credits. With the smallest pack (1,500 credits for $15) that is $0.20; the [API list price](https://fal.ai/models/fal-ai/nano-banana-2/edit) is $0.08 an image. 2K and 4K are not offered. Packs and plans are on the [pricing page](https://imagecolor.app/pricing).

## Common questions

### Can I change the color of an image for free here?

No. This site has no free tier and no free credits. You buy credits and pay per edit: one 1K edit costs 20 credits, which is $0.20 with the smallest pack. If an edit fails, the credits come back automatically.

### Will it change anything besides the color I ask for?

It can. The model redraws the whole picture. Across seven recolors of an object or text, the average difference outside it ranged from 2 to 6 out of 255. A car edit changed a shopfront, a dark background darkened the mug, and the tote edits added white stitching. Background edits also redrew the shadow. Name what must stay and inspect the whole result.

### How do I change the color of just one object in a photo?

Name the object, its new color and what must stay. In our runs, naming one flower, one chair or one car worked, with the shopfront miss on the car. There is no brush or mask here; you point at the object with words. See [change color of object in photo](https://imagecolor.app/change-color-of-object-in-photo), [change background color of image](https://imagecolor.app/change-background-color-of-image) and [change product color in photo](https://imagecolor.app/change-product-color-in-photo).

### Can it change the color of text in an image?

Our two text edits recolored a poster headline to brick red and three chalkboard lines to yellow. They kept the words we could read. The starting chalkboard already contained “2·5” instead of “2.5”, and the edit kept that error. These two examples do not establish accuracy for other fonts or small text.

### Can it change hair, skin or clothing color?

Not here. This site does not offer edits to photos of people. It is for products, objects, cars and artwork.

### What size is the result?

1K. Our results measured 1,024 × 1,024, 1,200 × 896, 1,376 × 768 and 896 × 1,200 pixels, each in the shape of the picture we started from. We have not tried other shapes.

### Who makes the model?

Google. It lists Nano Banana 2 as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image in its [image generation documentation](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/image-generation). This site calls it through fal.ai.

### Does the result carry a watermark?

Google says every image the model makes includes a SynthID watermark. We saw no visible mark on our sixteen pictures, and this site adds none.

### Is this the official Nano Banana or Google site?

No. Recolor is an independent web editor and is not affiliated with Google.

### What happens when an edit fails?

The credits come back to your balance automatically. That includes requests the provider’s safety filter refuses. An edit that came out but that you do not like is still charged.
